Making A Schedule: Stay Sane As A Stay At Home Mom

I remember crying to my best friend that being a stay-at-home mom made me feel like I was losing my mind, and she asked me if I had a stay-at-home mom schedule.

I told her no, wondering why I would need a schedule when I stayed home with my kids. Schedules were for working parents and careers, not moms at home with their baby and toddler.

Boy, I was wrong.

After I spent time reading about creating a stay at home mom schedule, I decided to give it a try. I felt like my days spiraled out of control, and I rarely accomplished the tasks that I wanted to get done. Most of the time, I rarely finished the chores, and everything felt like I made a difference at home.

A schedule changed everything. I find all of my missing time! Now, my house runs smoother, and I rarely feel like I’ve fallen behind. We’re all happier.

How Can A Stay At Home Mom Get It All Done?

When I became a stay at home mom, I felt overwhelmed. I had so much to get done and more that I felt needed to fit into my day. I began to wonder how stay-at-home moms get everything done throughout the day.

I talked to some of my friends and learned something valuable – a stay at home mom can’t get it all done unless she has a schedule.

Seriously, the answer is to come up with a stay-at-home mom schedule that keeps you accountable and helps you make sure all of the important tasks are completed throughout the week.

At first, I didn’t want to believe that was the only way. I had a schedule before when I worked outside of the home, and I liked the idea of free-flowing and relaxing. Unfortunately, my reality quickly showed me that it wasn’t working for me, and I needed to give scheduling a try.

It turns out that creating a daily schedule not only benefits me but benefits my kids as well. Kids thrive on schedules; they like to know what’s coming next and what to expect. It helps them feel safe and content.

How Do I Schedule My Day As A Stay At Home Mom?

Once you accept your reality that you need a stay at home mom schedule, it’s time to develop that schedule. Take a look at a stay at home mom daily schedule template and start to plan your own.

Here are some suggestions to get started.

1. Organize Your Schedule Around Important Tasks

When I tried to figure out how to schedule my day as a stay at home mom, I learned that the best route is to plan your daily schedule around the most important tasks and requirements.

For example, if you have school-aged children, you have to get them ready for school and arrive at specific times. Those are times that you need to make constants in your schedule and base everything else around those times.

Each day, your schedule might change because you have different plans for the day, but picking the most important and time-sensitive things will create a structure for your day.

Some examples are:

  • Doctor’s appointments
  • School
  • Lessons
  • Work tasks (if you work from home)

Plot these out on your schedule, and then you fill in the rest of the times.

2. Have A Nighttime Routine

Having a consistent nighttime routine for yourself helps you prepare for the next day. Take one or two daytime tasks that you don’t like to do when you wake up and move them to the nighttime task list.

Not only does it make you feel better in the morning, but it helps give you a break when you wake up and feel groggy.

A nighttime routine doesn’t have to look complicated. A few things you might consider are:

  • Switching a load of laundry
  • Cleaning up the kitchen
  • Packing school lunches
  • Checking over your to-do list for the next day

Don’t fill your evening with too many things. Your evenings should be for yourself and your partner. It’s time to relax, but scheduling a few quick tasks is no big deal.

3. Create A Morning Routine

Perhaps the single most important thing I did when I figured out how to be a successful stay-at-home mom was to come up with a morning routine that made my days feel good. A morning routine should give you time to yourself and helps you start the day off on the right foot.

I suggest waking up before your kids; it sets the tone for the entire day. A few things that you might want to include in your morning routines include:

  • Have a cup of coffee
  • Breakfast prepping
  • Exercising
  • Switching laundry loads
  • Journaling
  • Making breakfast
  • Getting a head start on work if you work from home

I use the time in the morning for a variety of tasks. I switch laundry, drink coffee, squeeze in a quick 15-minute yoga routine, answer emails, and work on a few tasks needed for my business. By the time my kids wake up in the morning, I already feel awake and ready to conquer the day.

4. Have Set Bedtimes

Set bedtimes are a must! You need a toddler schedule for stay at home moms that includes regular nap times and bedtimes.

Bedtimes should be another point on your schedule that stays consistent. There is no need to change bedtimes throughout the day; kids do better with consistency. Stick to a bedtime routine and the time that they go to sleep. Parents deserve time for a peaceful home without children awake, and kids need plenty of sleep to help grow and develop.

5. That Means A Bedtime For You

On the other hand, you need a solid bedtime as well. It’s okay if your bedtime varies slightly, especially on the weekends when you might stay up with your partner. However, if you want to know how to get on a schedule as a stay at home mom, one thing is having consistent bedtimes and waking times.

Adults need between 7-8 hours of sleep each night to function properly. If I get less sleep than that, I start to get regular headaches and an overall feeling of discomfort. My body feels drained; I need sleep, and so do you.

When you create your stay at home mom schedule, block out a 7-8 hour time frame for sleeping, and don’t compromise. Netflix will pause your favorite show until the next day.

6. Build In Time For Exercising

Exercising is something that too many moms avoid, but we need to be healthy, and part of that is exercising regularly. I suggest coming up with a stay at home mom workout schedule that involves being active four to five times per week.

Exercising doesn’t need to be something that you dread. It might be taking daily walks with your kids around the neighborhood or trying a few workout videos on YouTube.

7. Make Sure You Have Free Time

You need time to yourself, so build in free time. You need time to explore hobbies for stay at home moms, and you need to make friends.

It’s easy for moms to lose themselves to motherhood, but take time each day to spend on something you love. It could look different each day. One day, you might work on a knitting project, and the next might be binging on your favorite Netflix show.

No matter what you do for yourself, build free time into your daily schedule for stay at home moms.

How Do Stay At Home Moms Manage Time?

We all have the same 24 hours per day to accomplish what we need to get done, so how do stay-at-home moms manage time? How is it possible that some moms seem to have their lives under control, but you feel like a train wreck?

The difference is how you manage that 24 hours. We all have the same amount of time daily, but successful stay at home moms manage their time differently.

Here are some tips to help you manage your time efficiently.

1. Have A Real Schedule

You have to figure out how to schedule my day as a stay at home mom and stick to your schedule. A schedule can’t fly out the window every day if you don’t feel like sticking to it. Once you create it, dedicate yourself to sticking to it and making it work for your family.

2. Meal Plan

Another trick to help you manage your time as a SAHM is to create a weekly meal plan. I tried biweekly and monthly meal plans, but I like to look at the weekly sales, weather, and schedule to come up with what meals we will have each week.

If I have more appointments and meetings during one week, I know I need to schedule a few slow cooker meals or plan to order take-out food at least one that week.

Instead of wondering what’s for dinner, you’ll have a plan, and make sure you stick to it.

3. Have A Cleaning Schedule

You also need a stay at home mom cleaning schedule to manage your time. Part of learning how to be a good stay-at-home mom on a schedule is coming up with a way to balance all of your house’s cleaning needs.

One of my favorite suggestions is to have a list of regular tasks for each day and a focus area each day. Mondays might be the day that you scrub the bathrooms; every other day is when you wipe down the counter. Tuesdays could be when you clean the bedrooms; on the other days, you pick up dirty clothes and change sheets.

Write out your cleaning schedule and stick it somewhere you’ll see it every day.

4. Use Shortcuts For Recurring Tasks

I seriously love shortcuts for moms. These are little life hacks for stay at home moms that save you time and brain space.

Here are some examples:

  • Saving grocery cart orders on your store app, so all you have to do is click reorder.
  • Having specific days that you run errands and only on those days.
  • Creating portioned-out snacks weekly and keeping them places that your kids reach without your help.
  • Setting times on electronics to monitor screen time.
  • Keeping cleaning supplies in each room rather than having them in just one area.

5. Build In Flexibility

Don’t schedule your tasks so close together that they overlap. I build extra time into all of my tasks because sometimes things take longer than expected, even easy things.

If I think that one task will take an hour, I will put it on my calendar as an hour and a half. If it doesn’t take that long, I have extra free time on my schedule now, which is awesome.

6. Set Daily Goals

Each day, I set around three to four main goals that I want to accomplish throughout the day. These goals should be things that you can realistically finish that day, considering your schedule and requirements throughout the day.

An example of three goals that I might set for my day include:

  • Deep cleaning the bathrooms
  • Working out for 30 minutes
  • Answering all of my emails

I write my daily goals at the top of my planner each day and cross them off as I finish them. Setting goals during my morning routine helps me stay focused for the day and gives me a direction to head.

7. Work On One Task At A Time

If you try to clean the living room and bathroom simultaneously while talking to your best friend and having art lessons with your kids, everything will implode. Focus on one task at a time and put down the phone.

I like to set timers throughout the day in short bursts and see what I can accomplish in that time frame.

When you stop multitasking and focus on one thing at a time, you finish each task faster.

How Many Hours A Week Does A Stay At Home Mom Work?

Believe it or not, studies suggest that the average stay at home mom works 98 hours per week, depending on the size of her family. The average start time is around 6:30 AM and doesn’t stop until close to 8:30 PM. That means most stay at home moms work 14 hours per day, seven days per week.

If it feels like you work a lot as a stay at home mom, you do! Staying home with your kids is exhausting and wonderful all at the same time, but it also means that you’re always on the clock.
